Frequently Asked Questions about Lab
Grown Diamonds

Are Man-made, Synthetic, or
Lab Grown Diamonds Real?

Lab-grown Diamonds are authentic and not counterfeit diamonds. These man-made diamonds contain 100% carbon and have the same chemical composition as that of earth mined diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are created by recreating the conditions underneath the Earth that result in diamond growth: pressure, heat, & carbon.

These diamonds are not like the diamond simulants in the market like cubic zirconia, or moissanite.

Cubic Zirconia

Is a Cubic Zirconia (CZ) the Same
Thing as a Lab Grown Diamonds?

Cubic Zirconia (CZ) does not contain carbon and, hence, is not at all similar to Lab-grown diamonds. CZ are quite weak in comparison to Lab-grown diamonds, as, performance and patterning do not match that of diamonds. It is very easy for a jeweler to differentiate between a diamond and a simulant of diamonds.

Synthetic Diamond

Is a Synthetic Diamond the Same
Thing as a Lab Grown Diamonds?

No. Lab grown diamonds are chemically exactly the same as natural diamonds and they are not synthetic.

Jeweler Tell

Can a Jeweler Tell That a
Diamond is Lab Grown?

At first glance, the natural diamonds & lab diamonds look similar even to trained jewelers. Even some of the commonly used jeweler tools are not able to judge the difference between lab-grown or mined ones. The inexpensive diamond testing tools used by jewelers are not a good fit as they fail to precisely test whether the diamond is lab-grown or mined.

A proper tool to test diamonds would cost around USD 10K. The best technique, known as Photoluminescence Spectroscopy, involves each diamond to freeze at -320°F. The majority of jewelers do not keep these types of tools due to the cost & complexity involved.

Therefore, every lab diamond beyond 0.50 Carat is certified by non-profit organizations of Gemology inscribed with the microscopic laser. So, any jeweler with the use of a microscope get the distinctive ID of the diamond & search it on the global database & verify its type.

How Do You Grow a
Lab Diamond?

When the pressure, heat, and carbon are set to similar circumstances underneath the earth, a lab-grown diamond is formed. Two methods for this are:

  • HPHT (High Pressure-High Temperature)
  • CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

Each of them is used for developing multiple sizes & ranges of diamonds.

How Long Does it
Take to Grow a Diamond?

A 1-carat lab-grown diamond requires 7 to 10 days to grow, and for 3 carats it takes up to a month. Any attempt to speed up the process of growing diamonds leads to fractures in the crystal. Therefore, the speed limit for growing diamonds has to be followed.

Flawless and Perfect

Are All Lab Diamonds
Flawless and Perfect?

The color & clarity range for lab-grown diamonds is similar to natural diamonds. The variation observed in natural diamonds related to 4C’s is seen in lab diamonds as well, &, therefore, before buying a lab diamond, please check all the specifications carefully.

Are Lab Diamonds Cheaper
than Mined Diamonds?

It is true that Lab-grown diamonds are sold around forty to fifty percent less in comparison to natural diamonds of similar properties. Very similar to natural diamonds, lab-diamonds get their prices based on the properties they have.

The same trend follows for fancy colored lab-diamonds. Prices are remarkably lower than fancy colored mined diamonds. Similar to natural diamonds, fancy colored lab diamonds are rare too.

Are Lab Diamonds Graded
by Third Party Organizations?

Gemological laboratories like GIA, GCAKL, AGS, or IGI certifies almost all lab-grown diamonds over 0.50 ct. We suggest Lab-grown diamonds with certifications only.

GIA grade

Does GIA grade
lab diamonds?

GIA grades lab-grown diamonds. LGDR, a digital-only detailed report is provided by GIA for lab-grown diamonds with an evaluation of 4C’s in-depth. The digital report contains a QR code directly linked to the educational webpage of GIA. To facilitate the purchase of lab-grown diamonds to consumers, GIA inscribes the report number on the diamond’s girdle.

AGS Laboratories grades lab-grown diamonds. A digital-only detailed report is provided by AGS for lab-grown diamonds with an evaluation of 4C’s in-depth.

Insured

Can I Get a Lab Diamond
Appraised and Insured??

One can surely get the lab-grown diamonds insured and appraised, similar to natural diamonds.

Lab Grown Diamonds

Can I Resell a
Lab Grown Diamonds?

Both, natural diamonds & lab-grown diamonds have a resale market. Price fluctuations for lab-grown diamonds is equivalent to natural diamonds.

Lab Diamonds

Do Lab Diamonds
Change Color Over Time?

No. Laboratory-grown diamonds do not fade, discolor or cloud over time.

Lab Diamonds

Where are Lab
Diamonds Grown?

Lab-grown diamonds are developed by scientists, engineers, gemmologists, and technicians around the globe. Some of the prominent countries doing it are: - Russia, US, France, Germany, UK, Ukraine, India, Singapore, Japan, Belgium.

Lab Diamonds

Are Lab Diamonds Environmentally
Superior to Earth-Mined Diamonds?

Producing lab-grown diamonds is a feasible practice with the abundance of carbon and other renewing energy’s. Natural mining of diamonds consumes huge energy in comparison to that of growing a diamond. According to a study, it takes 250 kW hrs of electric energy to mine a single carat diamond. This can power almost average US households for nine days or could even make a Tesla Model S run for more than 600 miles.
